Verdict
Is Mistfall Hunter Worth Playing?
An honest read based on confirmed facts and beta reception — not hype.
The Case For It
- The open beta pulled in roughly 430,000 players and landed on Steam's Top Demos and Top Trending charts — genuine, measurable interest rather than just marketing buzz.
- Early press coverage of the beta and Steam Next Fest build was notably positive, particularly around the combat feel.
- A confirmed no-pay-to-win stance, with cosmetics and Fate Coins as the only monetization beyond the base price.
- Day-one Xbox Game Pass makes it low-risk to try if you already subscribe.
- Full crossplay across PC, Xbox, and PlayStation means you're not locked out of playing with friends on other platforms.
The Case For Caution
- Recurring performance complaints throughout beta — stuttering and frame drops even on capable hardware — plus network infrastructure strain reported during the final pre-launch test.
- No dedicated duo queue, which has been the single most-requested feature by a wide margin.
- Extraction games as a genre have a mixed track record for long-term player retention (see our note on this in the FAQ) — Mistfall Hunter's post-launch health is genuinely unknown at this point.
- Some classes (Sorcerer, Withered Knight, Seer as of the last beta) are still missing their second weapon stance, which will feel incomplete until that lands.
Who It's a Good Fit For
If you enjoyed the risk/reward loop of extraction games but wanted faster, more soulslike combat instead of a slower tactical crawl, Mistfall Hunter is aimed squarely at you. See our comparison to other extraction games for more on how it differs from Dark and Darker, Arc Raiders, and Tarkov.
Who Should Wait
If performance issues are a dealbreaker for you, or you specifically want to play in a duo without a random third player, it may be worth waiting to see how the studio addresses those points post-launch before buying in.
